How do prolongers and desensitizers work?

Prolongers and desensitizers numb your genitals, so you’re less sensitive and hold off on orgasm longer. Mainly, the lidocaine and benzocaine in the product cause the numbing. Men, in particular, can delay their ejaculation time by 2 to 3 times longer with something like the Colt Desensitizer Spray.

You apply the longer 10 to 15 minutes before any sexual activity. Your skin should fully absorb it in 30 minutes at most.

Are desensitizers safe to use?

Desensitizers are safe as long as the user is not allergic to the ingredients. For example, lidocaine or benzocaine are common in desensitizers as numbing agents. Using them in huge amounts can expose you to toxicity, especially if you’re naturally allergic. 

You would know you’re experiencing side effects if your skin burns, tingles, or your genitals feel numb for longer than intended.

How long do prolongers last?

Prolongers can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the amount applied. Start with 3 sprays at most if it’s your first time using one. Go for a non-numbing one like the Drywell Natural Delay Spray.

Can desensitizers affect my partner?

Both lidocaine and benzocaine-based desensitizers can affect your partner. If it’s benzocaine-based, wait for 5 minutes for the product to dry before engaging in intercourse or other sexual activities. 

Lidocaine-based sprays and creams are safer and can even be used during pregnancy. If your partner is experiencing irritation regardless, wipe the desensitizer off immediately.

What’s the difference between sprays and creams?

Sprays start working quicker, and you can apply them by simply pressing down on the bottle. With cream, you apply a small amount, and the absorption process takes longer, but the effect lasts far longer.

  • Sensitivity Level: Prolonging creams can decrease your sensitivity level more. Sprays act fast and fade away fast. 
  • Preference: If you don’t like getting your hands dirty, you might like desensitizing sprays more. Condoms with desensitizing agents are also a good option if you want the effect to be instant. 
  • Duration: Creams last the longest. The effect of sprays can be prolonged if you keep on reapplying. With a condom, you have to throw them out once it’s used.
